Western Leaders Threaten Sanctions Over Israel’s Renewed Gaza Offensive: The warning came as the Israeli military launched a new phase of its campaign on Friday, with Netanyahu declaring intentions to take full control of the Gaza Strip. Humanitarian agencies have already warned that famine is imminent in the region due to ongoing restrictions on aid.
International Condemnation of Aid Blockage
In a joint statement released by the British government, the leaders condemned the obstruction of humanitarian supplies, stating:
“The Israeli Government’s continued blockage of essential aid to civilians is unacceptable and may constitute a violation of international humanitarian law.”
They also reiterated their opposition to settlement expansion in the West Bank and warned of further consequences:
“We will not hesitate to implement additional measures, including targeted sanctions, if these actions persist.”
Netanyahu’s Rebuttal
In response, Netanyahu strongly rejected the criticism, accusing the three governments of rewarding what he described as a “genocidal assault” against Israel on October 7, 2023. He maintained that Israel would continue its military campaign until its objectives are met, including the release of hostages held by Hamas and the complete disarmament of the Gaza Strip.
Blockade and Hostage Crisis
Since early March, Israel has imposed a blockade on the entry of food, fuel, and medical supplies into Gaza in an effort to pressure Hamas to release hostages taken during the group’s October 7 attack, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths—mostly civilians—and the capture of 251 hostages, according to Israeli officials.
Western Leaders Threaten Sanctions
The Western leaders acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense but described the current escalation as “grossly disproportionate.” They declared they would not remain passive in the face of “grave violations” by the Israeli government and voiced their backing for ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to secure an immediate ceasefire.
Support for Palestinian Statehood
They also emphasized their commitment to a two-state solution and said they were prepared to formally recognize a Palestinian state as part of that framework.
Hamas Reaction and Humanitarian Toll
Hamas responded positively to the joint declaration, calling it a “significant step” toward reinforcing international law and humanitarian norms.
Meanwhile, the war has left Gaza in ruins. According to Gaza’s health authorities, more than 53,000 people—primarily civilians—have been killed, and nearly the entire population has been displaced amid relentless Israeli air and ground assaults.
