Marriage Restraint Bill into Law: In a historic move, President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the Islamabad Capital Territory Child Marriage Restraint Bill, 2025, into law — a pivotal development in the effort to combat child marriage within the federal capital.
Originally introduced as a private member’s bill, the legislation was approved by Parliament and received formal presidential assent through a notification issued on May 29, 2025. This new law represents a critical advancement in safeguarding children’s rights in Pakistan and brings national policy more in line with international human rights commitments.
Marriage Restraint Bill into Law Hailed as Landmark Achievement
Senator Sherry Rehman, a staunch advocate of the bill, took to social media to commend the President for upholding the legislation in the face of substantial opposition. “A proud day for Pakistan,” she wrote, crediting the perseverance of both women and men who championed the bill.
MNA Nafisa Shah also celebrated the enactment, calling it a “landmark achievement” that will enhance protections for women and improve outcomes in maternal and child health.
The legislation establishes a minimum age for marriage and imposes penalties on those who breach the law. It is specifically designed to deter early and coerced marriages, which overwhelmingly impact young girls.
Human rights groups and civil society advocates have widely praised the new law, recognizing it as a significant breakthrough in the battle against child abuse and exploitation.
