Persistent Heatwave Forecast Across Pakistan: ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a continuation of heatwave conditions throughout the current week, driven by the presence of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere. This prolonged spell of intense heat is expected to impact various regions of the country, with significantly above-normal temperatures predicted.
According to the PMD, daytime temperatures in Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are likely to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average between May 20 and May 24. Similarly, central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to experience temperatures 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal during this period.
Persistent Heatwave Forecast Across Pakistan may also trigger dust storms or gusty winds in some plain areas of the country, especially in the afternoon and evening hours. These weather phenomena are expected to occur sporadically and are primarily attributed to the excessive surface heating.
In light of these conditions, health and climate experts have urged the public to take extra precautions, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and women. People are strongly advised to:
Minimize exposure to sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.
Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
Stay indoors or seek shade whenever possible during the peak heat hours of the day.
Additionally, the rising temperatures in the northern mountainous regions may accelerate the melting of snow and glaciers, potentially affecting river flows and increasing the risk of related hydrological impacts.
The PMD is closely monitoring the situation and advises the public to stay informed through official weather updates and advisories.
