In Lahore, the Punjab government has initiated a rigorous crackdown on smoke-emitting factories in a bid to enhance air quality and mitigate the looming threat of smog. Senior Minister Punjab, Marriyum Aurangzeb, revealed that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has commenced the second phase of this crackdown, conducting raids primarily along the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway.

Ms. Aurangzeb emphasized that the identification and mapping of factories emitting substantial amounts of smoke have already commenced. Furthermore, legislative measures concerning this issue are underway, indicating that stringent penalties and fines will be imposed on non-compliant factories once the legislation is finalized.

In her appeal to industries, the Punjab senior minister urged them to actively participate in efforts to cleanse the atmosphere, recognizing the shared responsibility in combating air pollution and safeguarding public health.

“Clean air is the foundation of good health, providing us with the breath of life and the vitality to thrive.”

In February, the Lahore High Court (LHC) took decisive action to combat the escalating smog crisis by issuing a significant directive. Justice Shahid Karim, in a written order, mandated educational institutions to designate one period per week solely for environmental and plant awareness.

This directive underscores the crucial role of education in fostering environmental consciousness and responsibility among students. By incorporating environmental education into the regular curriculum, the LHC aims to empower future generations with the knowledge and tools needed to protect and preserve our natural surroundings.

This proactive approach not only addresses the immediate challenge of smog but also cultivates a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. It highlights the importance of collective action and education in safeguarding our planet for generations to come.
