China Condemns US Visa Revocations:
China has sharply criticized the United States over its recent move to revoke visas for Chinese students, denouncing the policy as politically driven and discriminatory. Beijing warned that the decision could further strain already delicate relations between the two global powers.
At a regular press briefing in Beijing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused Washington of acting under the guise of ideology and national security.
She stated that the policy severely violates the legitimate rights of Chinese students and poses a threat to the broader US-China relationship.
“This political and discriminatory action exposes the falsehood behind the US’s claims of freedom and openness,” Mao said. “It hampers regular exchanges between the peoples of both nations and weakens the foundation of their bilateral relationship.” Such actions will only further erode the United States’ international image and credibility.”
The criticism follows comments by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who announced a crackdown on visas for Chinese students, especially those with alleged links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or studying in fields deemed vital to national security. Rubio said the State Department, in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, would step up scrutiny of all future visa applications from China and Hong Kong.
The policy is expected to affect thousands of students. The CCP has over 100 million members, and many Chinese students in the US are enrolled in science and technology disciplines—areas Washington views as sensitive.
In response, Mao confirmed that China has lodged formal diplomatic protests with the United States. She reiterated China’s stance that such measures harm mutual understanding and cooperation.
When asked whether the move could spill over into other areas of US-China relations, such as trade, Mao emphasized Beijing’s desire for stable ties.
She expressed hope that the United States would work with China, adopt more constructive measures, and help foster a stable, healthy, and sustainable development of bilateral relations.

The visa restrictions come amid ongoing US-China tensions over technology, trade, and regional security. Although the Biden administration has sought to ease friction in recent months, this latest measure risks reigniting diplomatic conflict and complicating future engagement.
