Islamabad: The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad has officially verified the presence of Type-1 Wild Poliovirus (WPV1) in environmental samples from two additional cities
The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has announced the detection of Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1) in an additional four sewage samples from districts previously identified as infected. This brings the total number of environmental samples for the current year to 112.
Of these, three samples originated from various districts within Karachi, while one was collected from Pishin. Genetic analysis indicates that these samples are linked to the imported YB3A cluster of WPV1.
A laboratory official stated that the virus has been detected in sewage samples from 33 districts thus far this year.
