In a recent statement, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced significant steps to tackle the persistent water scarcity in the city. Approval has been granted for a project worth Rs 12 billion, aimed at bringing an additional 200 million gallons of water to Karachi from the Hub Canal within a year.
Additionally, a proposal has been forwarded to the Sindh government for a project costing Rs 77 billion to extract water from Keenjhar Lake to supplement Karachi’s water supply.
Highlighting the aging infrastructure as a major contributor to the water shortage, Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized the need for modernization. He noted that the current water supply system from the Hub Dam, in operation for 45 years, only provides 55 million gallons instead of the required 100 million gallons. To address this, plans are underway to construct a new canal to meet the city’s water demand.
The Mayor underscored that these initiatives, including the construction of a canal from the Hub Dam and other water projects like K-IV, will play a pivotal role in alleviating Karachi’s water scarcity issues.
